Hi, I’m Gakuto.
Design × Engineering.

Hi, I’m Gakuto — a design engineer building the bridge between engineering and design. I’m looking for a six-month end-of-studies internship, starting February 2027.

Product design

After five years and nine months as a software engineer at Panasonic, one of Japan’s largest electronics makers, I’m now in UTC’s UX Design master’s programme to dig into two questions: what systems should we build, and what experiences can they create? I want to be the bridge between design and engineering, building products that use technology to make people’s lives better.

Dodo: making a baby’s night visible

A cat-shaped sleep assistant and companion app that shows why a baby can’t sleep — and calms the room for the whole family.

The challenge

Parents can’t tell what keeps their baby awake, and existing products either monitor or soothe — never both.

The impact

One gentle device that analyses sleep and adjusts light, sound and temperature, well received in lo-fi and hi-fi tests with parents.

M5 Scouter: AR that clips onto any glasses

A home-built AR device, priced for anyone, that shows running speed and direction — or a Pomodoro timer — in the corner of your vision.

The challenge

Commercial AR glasses are expensive, and lifting your arm to check a smartwatch mid-run breaks your stride.

The impact

Two working apps on a low-cost ATOMS3 build, entered in the M5Stack Japan Creativity Contest 2024 and picked up by YouTube creators.

AR Walking Assist: walking with another self

Through AR glasses, a walker sees an avatar of themselves whose gait is gradually enlarged — and their own stride follows.

The challenge

Rehabilitation cues can steer walking rhythm, but not spatial gait such as stride length.

The impact

Stride length rose significantly (p < 0.01) with no change in rhythm — even for participants who never noticed the avatar change.

Compris! — from “huh?” to “got it!”

A Windows app that subtitles and translates foreign-language lectures live, answers questions mid-class, and turns each lecture into notes, vocabulary and quizzes.

The challenge

As a student in France I couldn’t keep up with lectures, and existing tools were costly subscriptions that kept my data in their cloud and stopped at listening.

The impact

Designed, built and put on sale alone in three weeks — a one-time purchase that keeps all data on the user’s PC.
